from www.aoltv.com – NBC and the NFL announced last night that Madonna will perform at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show.
In a statement, Madonna said she’s partnered with a creative team from Cirque du Soleil, choreographer Jamie King and multimedia artists from Moment Factory, “to create a signature performance for the Super Bowl’s Halftime Show, which will be broadcast worldwide.”
Super Bowl LXVI will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Sunday February 5. The live halftime show is the most-watched television musical event of the year: More than 162 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year’s show featuring The Black Eyed Peas performing with Slash and Usher.
Madonna joins a long list of illustrious halftime performers including The Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2.
Her new film ‘W.E.,’ which she wrote, directed and produced, opens for a limited one-week release in Los Angeles on December 9 and will open nationally on February 3 2012, two days before Super Bowl XLVI.
King has served as Madonna’s creative director for the last 13 years, and they’ve worked together on four tours including 2008’s ‘Sticky & Sweet’ and her 2006 record-breaking ‘Confessions’ world tour. King also wrote and directed the critically acclaimed Cirque du Soleil ‘Michael Jackson IMMORTAL Tour’ earlier this year, and he directed Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ Tour and Britney Spears’ ‘Femme Fatale’ Tour.
In July 2011, ‘Variety’ named King “Variety’s Billion Dollar Tour Director”, acknowledging his vast combined tours’ box office tally, which is nearing $2 billion in ticket sales.
King is also producing and starring with Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony in the Latin American talent search television series ‘¡Q’viva! The Chosen,’ which will air on Univision in early 2012.
The Bridgestone-sponsored halftime show is an NFL Network production. It will be executive produced by Ricky Kirshner and directed by Hamish Hamilton.
