Columbia, SC from www.wltx.com — The owner of the Taboo Adult Superstore says his store will change its name to “Taboo.”

Owner Jeff White said that he felt parents’ concerns regarding the words “adult superstore” in his business’s name.

White said he applied Tuesday for a new sign permit that would allow the name change, and he expects to physically change the signage Wednesday, barring rainy weather.

The store, located at 4716 Devine Street, had caused controversy among city council members, business leaders, and the public. Business owners in the area and civil leaders oppose it for two primary reasons: a belief that the store will bring in crime and that it will cause other businesses to think twice about locating in the area.

The store meets all city ordinance guidelines governing adult stores.

Columbia City Council plans a special called public meeting Thursday to have a second reading on new rules regarding sexually oriented businesses in the city limits. The proposal calls for a new additional business license for adult businesses. Thursday’s meeting is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at Columbia’s City Hall.
