from www.contracostatimes.com – In a compromise with City Attorney Carmen Trutanich [pictured], the Los Angeles City Council gave preliminary approval on Tuesday to a measure requiring the use of condoms in adult films.
Trutanich agreed to drop a lawsuit he had filed challenging an initiative circulated by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation that would have required actors on adult film sets to use condoms in order to get a permit to film in the city of Los Angeles.
Last month, the group announced it had successfully collected enough signatures to place the initiative on the June ballot.
In response, Trutanich had filed a lawsuit, seeking clarification from the courts about whether the city had the authority to enforce the measure. He’d argued that if the initiative is ultimately challenged by the porn industry and thrown out, the city would have wasted money and time on preparing the ballot initiative.
On Tuesday, Trutanich agreed to end the lawsuit, but said he wanted a working group of city officials and activists to tweak the measure before it takes effect.
Councilman Paul Koretz, who has been pushing such a measure without success from his days in the state legislature, said he considered the action a major step forward in workplace safety.
From AP: LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles City Council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance that would require porn actors to wear condoms during film shoots.
The 11-1 vote Tuesday still requires a second vote next week to make the requirement law and avoid the need for a ballot measure.
Several members of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation urged council members to approve the ordinance. The group last month said it gathered enough signatures to put the issue on the June ballot.
A trade association for the porn industry opposes mandatory condom regulations, but has advocated for consistently testing adult film performers for sexually transmitted diseases.
