New York- Mayor Bloomberg is promising a crackdown on the sex shops that are burgeoning in the West Village. “I wouldn’t want a porno parlor in my neighborhood and you shouldn’t have a porno parlor in your neighborhood,” the mayor told 300 people at a town-hall meeting last week.

The mayor’s ability to shut down the sex shops hinges on a court ruling due soon. In 2001, the city amended a zoning law that allowed adult stores to operate in residential neighborhoods and within 500 feet of a school or a church as long as 60 percent of its merchandise wasn’t pornographic.

But several topless bars, an adult video store and an adult theater sued the city, saying the amendment was unconstitutional.
