Louis Theroux’s latest documentary on the US porn industry which aired in the UK had the British press trying to out do one another in descriptions of America’s porn dramatis personae. Rob Black, particularly, gave them volumes. Here are some of the ways Black’s described:

from www.onthebox.com – “Crack is a hell of a drug it would appear. Today Rob looks like a concussed, barely-conscious Robert De Niro, but with the neurotic, nerdish enthusiasm of Quentin Tarintino. He speaks of his body of work as if he’s Bergman, dismissing the work of other directors’ like “Cum Splodgers 3” (the weakest of the trilogy) as ‘jerk off shit'”.

from www.independent.co.uk – “Another of his subjects, Rob Black, a shock-porn producer who’d spent time in prison since Theroux’s last visit, reminded you of Al Pacino in one of his grubbier roles, a jittering moral vacuum just this side of psychosis.

And Theroux himself writing on guardian.co.uk – “One of the unlikeliest figures in the new reinvented industry – and a one-man indicator of how much it has changed – is Rob Zicari, better known as Rob Black. In the 90s, Black was one of the most notorious provocateurs in porn. He specialised in tastelessness; his films were more like grotesque exercises in taboo-breaking than anything anyone might conceivably watch for sexual pleasure.

“In 1997 I interviewed him in his office in LA and visited him on the set of a production entitled Forced Entry, a film about rape. He was only 23 at the time and I was struck by the strange contrast of his being a friendly, intelligent guy – albeit in an over-caffeinated way – while making porn films that specialised in degrading women.”
