AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and other supporters and backers of Ballot Measure B in Los Angeles County will host a victory party, Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 8pm PT (until election returns are in) for what is formally known as the County of Los Angeles Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act.
The measure, which appears on Tuesday’s election ballot throughout Los Angeles County, will require producers of adult films to obtain a public health permit from the County; follow all health and safety laws, including condom use; and pay a permit fee sufficient to cover all enforcement costs.
As a convenience to TV stations nationwide interested in the outcome of this hard fought campaign over the health and safety of adult film performers, LIVE SATELLITE TV FEEDS (in 15 minute windows) from the ‘Yes on B’ victory gathering in Hollywood will be beamed at four (4) times throughout the evening starting at 9:30pm Pacific Time (PT). Feed times include: 9:30pm to 9:45pm PT; 10:15pm to 10:30pm PT; 11:15pm to 11:30pm PT and 11:45pm to 12 MN, PT.
“Given our own polling and the enthusiastic response we received from voters during many community events we held in Los Angeles, I am optimistic that Measure B will pass and become law,” said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation and one of the five named proponents of the ballot initiative.
“Regardless of the outcome, our ‘Yes on B’ team waged an honorable and strategic campaign, and we will continue our efforts to improve the health and safety of adult film workers everywhere.”
The ballot measure was initially spearheaded by AIDS Healthcare Foundation and members of FAIR (‘For Adult Industry Responsibility’) after as many as 22 HIV infections believed to be tied to the adult film industry were reported in two outbreaks in Los Angeles since 2004, and amidst thousands of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occurring annually among adult performers.
Measure B is straightforward in what it requires when voted into law November 6: 1) adult film producers must obtain public health permits from the County, 2) they must then follow all safety laws including condom use and availability on set, and 3) it allows for the collection of permit fees to pay for enforcement, which would be spot enforcement. Ballot Measure B has been endorsed by the Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA), The California STD Controllers Association (CSTDA) and La Opinión, the largest Spanish language newspaper in the United States and second most read paper in Los Angeles.
Over the past three weeks, a ‘Yes on B’ big rig, a 70 foot, 18 wheel truck has been stopping in select cities, towns and events throughout Los Angles County urging Angelenos to vote ‘Yes’ on Measure B. During these campaign stops, supporters & advocates handed out voter information as well as over one million free condoms as part of the awareness campaign leading up to the election.
‘Yes on B’ backers employed many elements of more traditional political campaigns in its unusual ballot measure campaign: billboards, print and online advertising, slate cards and TV & radio spots, including two ‘Yes on B’ 30-second television commercials. The first, titled ‘Darren and Derrick,’ featured Darren James and Derrick Burts, two former adult performers who became infected with HIV while working in the industry. A second ‘Yes on B’ TV spot, titled ‘134 Permits,’ outlined 134 other businesses required to take out permits or licenses to operate in Los Angeles County—from tattoo parlors to beauty and nail salons to barber shops.
