AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and other supporters and backers of Ballot Measure B in Los Angeles County will host a MEDIA AVAILABILITY throughout the day Friday, December 14, 2012 to discuss the victory of the ballot measure (which passed with final poll numbers 56.94% in favor to 43.04% against), Friday, December 14, 2012.

AHF officials will also discuss the porn industry’s planned lawsuit opposing the measure as well as implementation of the law. The measure, formally known as the County of Los Angeles Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act, was formally certified last week along with other election results in Los Angeles County during a Board of Supervisors Meeting.

The law now requires producers of adult films to obtain a public health permit from the County; follow all health and safety laws, including condom use; and pay a permit fee sufficient to cover all enforcement costs.

“This is a truly historic moment in Los Angeles: Measure B, the County of Los Angeles Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act, officially goes into effect today,” said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and one of the five named proponents of the ballot initiative.

“Equally remarkable: the fact that over 1.6 million Angelenos voted in favor of safer sex by casting ballots for Measure B, as simply and as straightforward as if it was a water bond or tax measure they were voting on.

“This is a major step forward in normalizing safer sex and condom use as well as ensuring worker safety for the adult performers in this industry. We encourage County officials and the industry to now work together to see how they may best implement and comply with this new law.”

The ballot measure was initially spearheaded by AHF and members of FAIR (‘For Adult Industry Responsibility’) after as many as 22 HIV infections believed to be tied to the adult film industry were reported in two outbreaks in Los Angeles since 2004, and amidst thousands of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occurring annually among adult performers.
