from www.wivb.com – BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – An ex-teacher got in trouble for having sex with a teenaged boy. Now a woman who fled Buffalo for Chicago is heading back to prison for failing to register as a sex offender.

A softer-looking and subdued Cara Dickey barely spoke in court Thursday morning, as she waited to hear her sentence for failing to register as a sex offender.

Dickey was on parole when she cut off her ankle bracelet, and skipped town in January. She was convicted in 2009 of raping one of her former students at Buffalo Charter School and making a suicide pact with him. She spent three years in prison.

Her attorney told State Supreme Court Justice John Michalski, before that, Dickey was making progress, trying to get her life on the right track.

“During that year, Judge, she was a model parolee. She engaged with Back to Basics [Ministries], was doing remarkably well, Judge,” defense attorney Chrisanne Fergus said.

Cal Fenner of Back to Basics Ministries added, “She always did whatever was required. If I would have known a little bit more, I would have tried to help her more on the registration and all that, because that’s things that she needed to do, and I didn’t know anything about that, Your Honor. But other than that, I enjoyed working with her.”

Rumors were circulating Dickey was involved with another minor, when she left Buffalo. Dickey called News 4 while she was on the run, saying she wanted to set the record straight.

“My violation has come with being involved and fraternizing with another felon – a grown woman. There is no child involved; there is no man involved,” Dickey stated.

She was caught in Chicago after being arrested earlier for prostitution. U.S. Marshals brought her back to Buffalo.

Judge Michalski gave Dickey one year – concurrent with the 18 months she’s already serving for violating her parole.

Erie County DA Frank Sedita said, “It’s extraordinarily rare for somebody in this county who has been convicted for failure to register as a sex offender, which is a felony, and it’s usually a felony on top of some other sex crime you’ve already been convicted for… It is extraordinarily rare, in this county, for that individual to see a day of jail.”

Sedita says most sex offenders who fail to register in Erie County receive a conditional discharge, even though it’s a felony.

Dickey is scheduled to be released from jail in August of 2014.
