Deep Throat Soundtrack-update

Porn Valley- As Brian Grazer’s well-publicized documentary about the making of the film Deep Throat draws closer to theatrical release, you’re going to see an interest in the film, the likes of which Deep Throat, xxxdeepthroat.com never experienced during its mainden voyage- more often than not in mainstream theaters throughout the country. If nothing else, though, many are now going to be able to enjoy the music first time commercially.

Today I spoke with Matt Sullivan the founder of Light in the Attic, www.lightintheattic.net, a record company that specializes in audio esoterica. The company has already done extremely well with the marketing of the soundtrack from a Seventies porn film titled Lialeh https://adultfyi.com/read.aspx?ID=2872.

And if it can happen with a property that obscure, imagine, if you will, a commercially recognizable entity like Deep Throat inciting cash registers to riot. Particularly on the heels of the Grazer documentary which is scheduled for January.

A bonus in all of this good news is the fact that Light in the Attic has also added the soundtrack to the more obscure sequel to Deep Throat. Not Deep Throat II, the film starring Krista Lane, but Deep Throat Part 2 featuring the inimitable Linda Lovelace herself. To which there is some explanation owed. The hardcore reels of Deep Throat part 2 were stolen and never found and so an R-rated version was released.

The Deep Throat II more familiar to audiences also stars Ron Jeremy who was interviewed in conjunction with the soundtrack release. Jeremy talks about that era of porn and his involvement with the film and his interview has been transcribed for the CD booklet. Jeremy remembered seeing the Lovelace sequel in a theater in the Catskills.

“He went to a drive-in,” muses Sullivan. “He and his friends were pissed off because there was nothing much beyond boob shots. But he had some interesting tidbits about seeing Deep Throat I with his dad in Queens. He was 19 and in college.”

The Jeremy interview on behalf of the CD ran for about an hour and was done over the phone. “We typed it out and have it in the booklet,” says Sullivan “It was pretty interesting because he talks about what his feelings were when he first saw it before he went into the porn industry, along with his ideas and opinions of Linda Lovelace and what happened to her.”

Sullivan notes that Gerard Damiano was more of a conventional film director who knew how to use music in a movie.

“This re-issue has never officially been done on CD together [about a 63 minute running time],” Sullivan points out. He also tells me that he found a good company in L.A. to re-master the tracks.

“They spent a lot of time pulling the audio from the DVD and fixing it up as best they could by tweaking that old sound. It’s really good music- especially the second one,” says Sullivan. “They made so much money off the first sound track that they pumped a lot of money in the second one. It’s almost like a James Bond score with strings.”

An interesting side note, according to Sullivan, is that no one really knows who the musicians are in the original Deep Throat. “A lot of the information is hard to uncover because it’s been so long,” he says. “But we did the best we could to find out as much information as possible. It wasn’t easy. Any way, it’s a pretty big moment in American 20th century media. The original film is probably in the top ten cultural moments of the 20th century.”

Sullivan describes the CD’s artwork thusly: “Towards the end of Deep Throat there’s that picture of Linda Lovelace with the cock in her hand and the big smile on her face. We did that picture and we covered the cock with a big circular sticker that says Deep Throat on it, so it looks like it’s almost censored.”

The CD will be available in stores shortly. “And people are very excited about it in Japan, Australia, Europe, the UK, and Canada as well” adds Sullivan. “And because a lot of our audience is still into the vinyl, we re-did them separately on vinyl as well. The vinyl comes with a pullout 18×24 movie poster. We went all out on that one. Something like this is a collectors’s thing.”

Sullivan tells me that Lialeh also continues to sell very well. “People like it. It’s a really strong soundtrack plus people get a kick out of that old Seventies history and the music scene back then. I think Deep Throat will take this to the next level and will continue to push Lialeh as well.”

Although he never got to talk to the Grazer crew in their making of the documentary, Sullivan said he’s definitely looking forward to seeing it.
