Porn Valley- The Sports Swami had Kira Lane, www.kiralane.com on his show recently. From there banter, it sounded like it was a return visit with Lane noting that she’s been out of the industry most of the year and is getting back into the swing of things. “I took eight months off- quite a lot of changes, though.”
Swami asked about the 2057 rules and how they’re affecting her website. “Knowing that you’re doing risque pictures but the government wants to crack down on it.” Lane says it’s been difficult particularly with some of the payment processing companies shutting down. Lane said of the companies still doing it, they’re increasing their rates as well. As far as being a webmaster herself, Lane said the webmasters in the adult industry take initiative by employing Cyber Patrol or Net Nanny. “It really sucks- that’s what it boils down. My motto is if you don’t like what you see, don’t see it. Other than that we’re managing. It’s been a challenging.”
Asked if she had fears that the Bush administration was going to shut down the industry, Lane didn’t think that wide sweeping changes were possible.
“I was a little bit concerned but now that I heard that Ashcroft resigned I’m a little more relaxed,” she said. “But I’m not that relaxed. Particularly if Ashcroft somehow wound up on the Supreme Court.” [There’s a grim thought no one has really speculated upon.]
It was Lane’s opinion that everyone in the adult industry take responsibility to dot legal i’s and cross t’s so as to prohibit access to sites by kids under age. “It’s a free country. It’s tough. But if I had kids I know I wouldn’t want my kids on those sites. But at the same time I know I have to pay my bills I’ll do whatever I can do on my end to make sure that I can, publicly, be a responsible adult.”
Swami asked Lane about her love life, noting that she had a new boyfriend. Lane said not just the adult industry but the entertainment business as a whole is tough on relationships. “A lot of people don’t understand. I think it’s a glamorous life. You see it on MTV and VH-1. As a model and a striving actress and constantly going to auditions, going here and going there- to be honest it’s a tough life to have a boyfriend. We’re never home. We’re always traveling.” Lane said she was dating, however.
Lane said she loves a man with a sense of humor. “If you do some adult-related work, you have to have a sense of humor, but also passion and commitment. If you say you’re going to do something, follow through with it.” Lane anticipated the next question about her settling down any time soon. She said no. “I love my single life,” she laughs. “I don’t want to be a Mrs. yet.”
Asked about the January shows in Vegas, Lane said she hoped to be at Internext. “Which is adult webmasters. That’s right before AVN.” As far as attending adult conventions, Lane said she likes to check out the new faces in the business. “And keep up with Joneses.”
Lane, from the way she talks, abstains from adult projects but notes that she gets asked to do them. “I’ve been approached to see if I want to do adult work but I really haven’t crossed over,” she says. “I still do commercial work. And I know once you cross over you can’t go back. I’m still keeping that option open.”
Lane said she gets recognized at auditions from her role on HBO’s The Accidental Stripper. “I go oh god here we go. And it’s still taboo even if you do softcore. The late night B-movies. Some people really frown on that. For me I could never audition for Disney work because of what I have done. Which is fine because I know I can do other things.
“We’re starting to be more open about porn,” Lane contends. “The perfect example is Jenna Jameson crossing over. I think it’s great.” Lane said she’s being repped by a couple of agencies in Hollywood. “I need to be careful of a lot of people I work with because there are a lot of scam artists out there.”
Lane said she chooses her projects based on the win-win situation formula. Pressed on the scams issue, Lane said it’s been her experience that people don’t follow through on what they say and that she’s been exposed to the work for me now, I’ll pay you later ploy.
“Never works out- I learned that very early on.”
Lane said there’s always someone who’s going to want to pull a fast one on aspiring models. “It’s really sad because I’ve seen a lot of talented models who have been misguided and had to leave the industry. It’s pretty sad. You just got to be smart. Check references. A good producer will always give you a reference. And yes there are still casting couches out there.”
Three years ago Lane went to an audition- one that she didn’t do research on. “Shame on me.” Lane said she was required to undress for the director. She thought it wasn’t right. “I started to read and the so-called director said you need to strip.” Lane was told to unbutton her shirt and fondle herself. “Supposedly this was for a feature film so I literally got up and walked out.”
Lane said she later found info on casting sites talking about this one director having done this in the past. “There are times when you’re uncomfortable that you have to get up and leave,” she advises. “Luckily I did that.” Lane said she could see girls just trying to break into the business being caught up in those games.
“You want to please the producer, the photographer, whatever. A lot of girls just bite their lip and do what they do. But at the end of the day you’ve got to ask yourself are you going to be okay or have regret about what you’re doing. There are times when you’re going to be uncomfortable and have to stand up for yourself.”
