Chicago- A YMCA director has been fired and overnight rentals of Chicago’s 16 YMCA centers have been forbidden after a children’s early-morning swim meet overlapped with an overnight transgender fashion show, a YMCA spokesman said Saturday.

Greg Weider, who had been acting director of the New City YMCA on the North Side since the summer, was fired for not providing adequate supervision for the “House of Escada” fashion show, said Luis Diaz-Perez, a spokesman for the YMCA Metropolitan Chicago.

The event, which lasted from 11 p.m. Dec. 18 to 8 a.m. Dec. 19, conflicted with a swim meet that began at 7 a.m. Dec. 19.

Weider also was terminated for allowing the scheduling conflict to occur, Diaz-Perez said. Another employee, Michael Horton, the programming manager who oversaw scheduling at the center, resigned last week.

“The YMCA concern was how the facility was treated and the behavior of participants during the period of time they rented our facility,” said Diaz-Perez, referring to the alleged consumption of alcohol and sexual activity. “[Weider] did not manage the situation in a way that was consistent with the standards of the YMCA.”

Weider approved a lease agreement with a YMCA member who reserved the facility for the transgender fashion show, Diaz-Perez said. Young swimmers arriving early with their parents encountered runway models from the show occupying the same space.

They also discovered condoms in the locker rooms, which prompted workers to clean the rooms for contamination, he said.

Police were called to the center when an altercation broke out among participants in the show, Diaz-Perez said. There were no arrests or injuries.
