TAMPA, Fla. – Hillsborough County’s school district has found a new site for a school for emotionally disturbed students that was being built in a neighborhood containing strip clubs and X-rated video stores.
Construction on Carver Exceptional Center had been stopped last month after county commissioner Kathy Castor told officials the location violated county restrictions on adult businesses.
The school was scheduled to open in August to serve about 150 emotionally disturbed middle and high school students.
But the location near the adult stores and clubs led to a controversy, and city and county officials worked to find a new place for the school.
The center will replace Bryan Alternative School, which will be razed because of persistent air quality problems, chief facilities director MaryEllen Elia said Wednesday.
School officials were forced to move Carver from its original location because the Department of Transportation has purchased its former site for its widening of Interstate 275.
