To Whore or Not to Whore

PORN VALLEY, CA – At what point does ‘whoring out’ go to ones head? Personally, I think prostitution should be legal. I love and respect adult entertainers as well. I think they deserve a lot more credit then they get. You can call them sluts and whores, but they provide a needed service to the human race and many of them are good, down to earth, hard working people. Strippers? I like most of them too. Yea, some strippers give the adult world a bad name, but in general, these are women just doin’ their thing and paying the bills, while providing men some decent entertainment.
Of all the above mentioned, I think it’s safe to label them whores. Don’t take that as a negative expression. In many respects we are all whores. When I did mainstream radio, I whored out too. If a sponsor was paying for me to say his product was great, I was a whore. The computer programmer who makes graphic banner ads for a product he doesn’t believe in, he’s a whore. The school teacher who has to claim Christopher Columbus was a good man, who discovered America, knowing Columbus was a rape and pillager, is a whore as well. We’re all whores at times in our lives and only in the adult world does it become a little more literal.

But there are times that people need to turn off the “whore” mode and make a few choices that can add value to their whore appeal. As you may have read in one of my columns many months ago, promotion is a good way to build your value, fan awareness and side income. When I say ‘side income’ I mean, new members for your website, new buyers of your videos, new exposure to those who may hire you to feature dance or shoot new scenes. By doing promotion, any kind of promotion, you will be increasing your odds of all those good things not to mention, see your name in more search engines, publications, etc.

I recently contacted Angela D’Angelo in hopes to interview her for AdultFYI.com. My intensions were completely genuine, it was to be a generic question and answer piece aimed at giving her some exposure and giving you the readers some interesting content to enjoy. I wrote something like, “Hello Angela, my name is Wayne C. Lewis from AdultFYI.com and I would like to do a feature interview with you for the site. Please let me know how I may contact you and we’ll set something up.” I can’t find my exact e-mail but it was something like that. I send out generic invites like that all the time.

Her first response to me was very typical of someone who has taken “whoring” to another level and has lost touch of the things that can continue to help build her career.

Angela wrote:

Hi Wayne,
No problem how much does it pay and then I will let you know ya or na thank you 🙂
Sincerely,
Angela

This kind of interview for pay thing just baffles me. If I said, “Send me a naked photo gallery for my site and endorse my site as your favorite site” or something in that realm, I can understand why she would want to be paid. What I offered her was a forum for her to get press coverage. She wants to be paid for that?

I wrote back:

How much does an interview pay? How much does Stern pay you? How much does Barbara Walters pay? Nuttin’. It’s promotion. If you’d like the exposure, let me know.

Obviously we don’t have the same fan base as Stern and Walters, but the scenario is the same. We are not asking her to fuck and suck on camera here, we’re offering to feature her in the adult press.

Angela responded:

Thank you but I do not need promotion have a nice day

Now don’t get me wrong. She obviously has a right to decline the interview and I’m not at all mad at her for that. Even in my pathetic small circle of popularity from KSEX, I’ve had to decline interviews. What I am saying is that it is ridiculous to me that she chose to turn down a ten minute interview, with decent exposure because there was no money involved. Had she just wrote back, “Thank you anyway, but I’m going to decline,” you probably wouldn’t have even known about.

AdultFYI.com is not a news service that’s making and breaking careers. KSEXradio, AdultDVDTalk, LukeFord.com, SetGo, MikeSouth, JimmyD, AVN, AINews, etc., etc., etc….these aren’t services that you truly need to make a living in this business. But by ignoring the benefits of exposure these companies can offer you is a very big mistake in my opinion.

I tell everyone I know, mainstream and adult, never, ever turn down an opportunity for free promo. Whether it be a small chat room guest appearance, an internet radio show or an interview on an adult news service…do it. Do it all.

Look how fast mainstream celebs are easily forgotten when they are out of the limelight…the same results happen to adult careers, only people here are forgotten much faster.
