Porn Valley- The star of almost 50 adult films, including Loose Screw and Nuttin’ Hunnies, and the former star of Play..boy TV’s Night Calls: 411, Tera Patrick is a goddess in her industry who has made a name for herself thanks to her business smarts and exotic looks. quick bio Tera Patrick — née Linda Ann Hopkins — was born on July 25, 1976, in Great Falls, Montana. Discovered in San Francisco (she was raised there by her father) at the age of 13, she soon relocated to New York City to become a model. She spent five years working as a model and eventually quit in order to study microbiology at the University of Idaho. After working as a nurse for a while, she moved to California and took up modeling again. It was at that point that she met Suze Randall, a Penthouse photographer. In 2002, Tera was named “Penthouse Pet” and “Hustler Honey,” and of course, Play..boy also took interest in Tera’s career.
Once she had dominated the print industry, she ventured in front of the camera. She has starred in about 50 adult films and signed a deal with Digital Playground. In 2001, she won the “Best New Starlet” award at the Adult Video News Awards, which was followed up by more awards from Cyber Adult Video Review and Nightmoves magazine. Tera has also proven that she’s a great personality, as the host of 1999’s The Tera Patrick Show (on the Internet) and star of Play..boy TV’s Night Calls: 411.
In recent years, Tera has changed gears by launching her own company and settling down with her actor/rocker husband, Evan Seinfeld, in January 2004. We sat down with Tera to talk sex, her day job, and what turns her on (and off).
Q: AskMen.com typically strays from interviewing adult stars; what is it about Tera Patrick that appeals to mainstream publications like AskMen.com?
I think it is definitely the way I look, nothing against Jenna or any of the girls, but I’m not the typical silicon enhanced porn star. I’m tall, leggy and busty, but I have a very exotic look to me… I look more like a model than a porn star.
Q: You started off as a model in San Francisco when you were relatively young. Did you always want to be a model?
Yeah, I did. I was really interested in being a model when I was a little girl. I loved all the pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. I loved watching old movies — I was really into Bettie Page, she was a big role model to me. I’ve always looked up to models like Elaine Irwin and Stephanie Seymour. I’ve always loved modeling.
Tera can attribute her exotic looks to her mixed heritage: her mother is Thai and her father is English. On an unrelated note, she is also fluent in Hungarian. Q: You mentioned that you have an exotic look, and you definitely have a good head on your shoulders. Did you try getting into mainstream film, or were you just into sex and figured that you would have a better time in adult film?
It wasn’t either. Some girlfriends of mine wanted to pose for Playboy and they asked me to send my pictures in too. I didn’t think anything of it — I was just like, “Sure, whatever.” I didn’t think they would call me back the next day. They were like, “You have an exotic look and we are interested in shooting you.” I can’t explain it but it must have been in the cards or something. I never did pursue anything mainstream. I went and posed for Play..boy, then a week later I ended up meeting Suze Randall who shot me for Penthouse and Hustler — it was just a whirlwind from there. I ended up only being published in Play..boy in a foreign edition because it came out in Penthouse at the same time. I think that had I only been published in Play..boy, I might have gone down another road.
Q: After Playboy you still had the option to go mainstream, but once you do Penthouse and Hustler, you are sort of going down a road where you are like, “What’s next, how am I going to top this off? I guess I should start having sex.” No, no, just kidding…
No, it’s true, that’s how your mind works. I can tell you that honestly, because I own an agency and I talk to girls all day and all night about what they want to do, and they are like, “I want to go into mainstream” and I tell them, “You are at the wrong agency; you are not going to get into mainstream through porn — it’s just not how it works.” I think girls like Jenna Jameson and I have crossed over and made it, but mainstream is still kind of shaky once you’ve been in adult. After doing those magazines I started doing movies and it wasn’t a big leap, like you said.
Tera’s desire to go mainstream, her sex life with her husband and what turns her on the most…
Q: Do you consider going more and more into mainstream, or do you want to remain on the adult side of things?
I own my own production company now, and I own a talent agency. I actually just became the sex columnist for FHM UK — I enjoy writing, I really do. You know, if the opportunity presents itself, I am definitely receptive to it, but I haven’t been trying my hardest. I make a lot of money in adult and it’s where I started. My dream would be to star in an ad campaign — whether it be for Guess? or Versace or Louis Vuitton — I would love it, but, I’m not ready to cut off my porn roots 100% either.
Q: Why did you take time off in 2003 and 2004?
Because I started my company and I got married, and then I moved to New York and L.A. — now I kind of live bi-coastally. A lot of people like to compare Jenna and I as far as mainstream works, but our paths are very different. I don’t have a lot of time to pursue both, really. I have to run an agency and a production company in Los Angeles. I guess I can take my career pretty far — I could go another 10 years if I wanted to. But I’ll probably give it two more years in front of the camera, and then I’ll continue to do my column and to develop my other interests. My publicist has me going out on a lot of mainstream jobs and I’m doing a lot more with regards to my business.
Q: When your dad found out that you were going into adult film, what did he say?
Well, after I had posed in the magazines, he kind of knew that it was on the horizon. He was like, “Be careful and make your money, and do whatever makes you feel happy.”
Q: You mentioned that you got married. How on earth is your husband cool with his beautiful, talented, highly sought-after wife getting it on with all these strange guys?
I don’t work with men anymore, I only work with Evan [Seinfeld]. I quit working with men two years before I met Evan. We don’t have that kind of relationship. I met Evan in 2003 and I took time off, and we decided to form my production company and he agreed to star in movies with me. We only work together now, except that I work with other women. Other people are into that kind of lifestyle but we are very monogamous and we take our relationship very seriously, and I plan on being with him forever.
Tera Patrick has a clause in her deal that ensures that she will only perform with her husband Evan Seinfeld in films. Other women are also allowed. Q: At the end of a long day of work in front of the camera, do you come home and want to kick back and relax, or do you still have the energy to say, “Evan, your turn now”?
Well, it’s his turn all day! It’s really funny because we have this rule that the day before we shoot a movie, we don’t have sex at all. You’ve got to be prepared and you have to have all your energy. But when we come home, we are usually pretty chill. We relax a little bit, we eat, he catches up on e-mail, I catch up on Law & Order, and then we hop into bed together. Then he is all over me again, he’s like “C’mon, let’s do it” and I’m like “Okay.” Especially after a girl-on-girl scene, he really gets riled up!
Q: What is the biggest turn-on and turnoff for you?
Confidence; not cockiness, but confidence. I love shaved heads and tattoos. Someone who is eager to please but not too eager to please, and I like somebody who is objective and open to my needs. As for turnoffs, cigarettes and alcohol. No smoking, absolutely no smoking. I don’t drink and I don’t like the smell of alcohol, and I don’t like anybody who is drunk. I don’t like guys who don’t groom themselves, especially “down there,” and you need to have good teeth and good breath.
Q: What would you do if you were a guy for a day?
Oh my God… I don’t know! I don’t think I would have made a very good guy. I probably would have been gay. I would probably be a celebrity home designer — I would want to see the inside of the homes of some fabulously gay people.
Q: Interesting answer. What can we expect in the upcoming months?
I will be releasing more movies. I have a sex toy line coming out, called the Tera Patrick collection. I am writing a book and shooting a reality show about my life and Evan’s life — it’s called Rock Star, Porn Star. I’m still writing in magazines like FHM UK and I’m still doing appearances.
Q: Well we love every appearance you make, Tera. Thanks for your time.
