South Dakota- A storm of controversy is brewing over that new adult super center in Sioux Falls.

Annabelle’s is being built in the industrial area of the city along Benson Road at Cliff Avenue. It plans to sell everything from lingerie to X-rated movies. While many citizens have called city hall to protest, there’s little they can do to stop it.

David Eliason had been looking for a location in Sioux Falls for his adult super center for the past three years. “We looked to make sure we’re far enough from every definition that the city would have that they wouldn’t have any issues with us up here,” said Eliason.

Because Annabelle’s is within city limits, Eliason must follow Sioux Falls’ zoning laws. They say any adult use store can open as long as they don’t operate within 500 feet of a residential district, a church, a school or public park.

And this area meets all those stipulations. “We’re far enough back from church, a school, residence and everybody else that we need to be away from that this really is the ideal scenario to do this type of business,” said Eliason.

But many citizens think otherwise and want to stop Annabelle’s from opening this Friday.

“There’s nothing the public can do.”

Karen Venables is the chief zoning officer for the city. She says Eliason has followed all the rules. “As long as it’s allowed no protest or petition from the citizens would be able to stop it,” said Venables.

She says the city’s zoning laws could be changed to make it tougher for similar shops from going up, but this adult super center would be grandfathered in.
