Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals fired wide receivers coach Richie Anderson Monday after he was arrested during a prostitution sting last Thursday night.
Anderson retired from playing in the NFL after the 2005 season, enjoying a successful 13-year career as a fullback with the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.
He was named to the Pro Bowl team in 2000 when he was with the Jets, and is the team’s all-time leader in receptions by a running back with 305.
He was an assistant coach for the Jets last season before being hired by the Cardinals.
Anderson was charged with soliciting an undercover police officer for sex, but new Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said he wanted a chance to review the facts before determining Anderson’s future with the team, but made up his mind Monday in announcing the termination.
“While it’s disappointing, I’ve decided that it’s clearly in the best interest of our team in this particular instance,” Whisenhunt said. “Our focus now is on finding a replacement and I am confident we will be able to do that relatively soon.”
