CEDAR LAKE, Indiana– The shock of pornographic images appearing on what Sherryl Reeves says she purchased as a new blank VHS tape has her demanding answers.

While the answers aren’t immediately available, Family Dollar officials have decided to remove all of the Maxonic videotapes from shelves in the company’s Cedar Lake outlet.

“When we turned on the cassette to record a TV program we couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” Reeves said. “It was appalling to discover what you thought was a sealed product was something that obviously had been tampered with.”

Reeves, a mother of three who lives in Cedar Lake, said she can only theorize that the images got onto the tape through a glitch or the possible recycling of a tape.

Reeves said she purchased two sealed Maxonic Gold High Grade videotapes from the Cedar Lake store for $2. When she found the images on one, she contacted store and corporate officials.

“It’s not about a refund,” Reeves said. “What I hope is that the company will be made aware of the problem and will investigate what might have happened, so that it doesn’t happen again.”

Reeves said she still has receipts for the tapes, which she plans to return to the store Monday. She said both tapes appeared to be packaged correctly and sealed.

“Before we give them back to corporate offices, I want the district manager to view part of the tape,” Reeves said.

Sandy Santana, regional office manager for Family Dollar in Chicago, said he doesn’t take Reeves’ complaints lightly.

“Until we get to the bottom of this, I’ve instructed the district manager in our Cedar Lake store to remove all the Maxonic tapes from the store shelves,” Santana said. “In the 45-year history of our family stores, we’ve never had anything like this occur. We certainly don’t understand how it could happen, and we don’t condone that it did.”

Officials with the distributor of Maxonic tapes, Chelsea Enterprises of Brooklyn, N.Y., were unavailable for comment Friday.
