Muldraugh, Ky — Muldraugh city leaders are starting to work on a new law restricting adult oriented businesses. They began such a discussion last night, just minutes after approving a new adult bookstore for the small Meade county town.
So many turned out for the meeting it had to be moved to the city’s fire house
Folks who live in Muldraugh and a very vocal anti-porn group agree, they don’t want this kind of business in Meade County. But the city’s legal advisor says the law isn’t on their side.
“I’ve raised three kids. Love it. This is home,” says Karen Kinder. She doesn’t want to see another adult bookstore open in Muldraugh. But she says this small, Meade County town can’t win a costly legal battle to keep it out. “We don’t like it. We don’t want em here. We won’t support em. But there is nothing legally, we can do.”
As the Muldraugh City Council approved a second adult bookstore Monday night, it came one week after the same council denied a small business license.
The approval came after a reconsideration request was made from the city attorney who was concerned that a federal lawsuit might be threatened.
The Monday night approval comes over the strong objections of the group, MADCAP. The group fears a spread of adult oriented businesses in Meade County.
“I think this is going to send a signal to any adult establishment to come over to Meade County and Muldraugh,” says Randy Johnson of MADCAP.
The new store will operate out of an old gas station along a busy stretch of 31 W. Just down the street from another bookstore which opened a month ago.
“We will keep praying and hope that there is a legal way that we can get them out of the town,” says Johnson.
Danny Embry, the man who applied to operate the latest adult bookstore does not want to comment on all the controversy. His business is expected to open within days. Meanwhile the Muldraugh City Council is working on plans to limit where adult businesses can open in the future.
