MADISON, Wis. from www.wtaq.com – Taxpayers in the Middleton-Cross Plains school district have spent $300,000 to defend the firing of a teacher for looking at pornography at school.
The teachers’ union filed a grievance after former middle school science teacher Andrew Harris was let go. Six other school staffers and an administrator were also disciplined, after Middleton-Cross Plains officials found nudity, sexual jokes, and other adult content in their e-mails in 2009.
School Board president Ellen Lindgren says it’s hard for the cash-strapped district to spend money on lawyers. But she believes the community supports the firing of a teacher who looks at porn at work.
The union says it does not condone the practice – but it said the firing was not fair, and was it was not based on objective criteria. The union wants Harris reinstated, back pay for others who were suspended, and reversing the disciplinary actions against all involved.
The grievance is still pending – and some say it’s holding up negotiations on a new teacher contract.
