Conversations with Dave Pounder; his new radio show on LA’s KLSX 97.1 begins Friday night- final

Porn Valley- Dave Pounder. www.davepounder.com, has a couple of firsts going for him. A few months ago he put out a press release about doing his first anal scene. Which can be taken a certain way read at first glance. More significantly, though, Pounder has made another announcement- but this one involves doing a radio show.

This Friday night Pounder debuts in the Midnight to One slot on LA’s KLSX 97.1 with co-host Chase Styles. According to Pounder, although he will have guests from the porn industry such as Paul Fishbein [next week] and Ron Jeremy, [upcoming] the show’s not going to be about porn per se.

In fact, Pounder insists he won’t be taking calls from the people in the business.

It was only natural I bring up the fact that Ed Powers had a similar show on the station a few years ago. Powers, on the other hand, did entertain calls from the business on a regular basis.

“This is a pretty big deal,” says Pounder. “A major FM station. Hopefully this will be for at least a year and we can fill the show out and expand the hours.” And Pounder is not unaware that Powers had a show. Although Pounder never got to hear it.

“That was before I got into the business,” Pounder says. “I didn’t know what he talked about.”

[One of Powers’ more famous shows was the shootout between Luke Ford and attorney Paul Cambria.]

Now that he’s going to have Paul Fishbein on, Pounder has already received calls and suggestions- talk to Fishbein about this; talk to him about that.

“They want to know why he fired Mike Ramone,” muses Pounder who doesn’t sound like he’s going to be tackling that subject.

“Most people don’t even know who Mike Ramone is,” laughs Pounder. “This is a regular audience. The questions to Paul are going to be more like how are people changing the viewing habits of adult?; are they watching it more online? That kind of thing.”

“But you know you’re going to get calls from people in the business,” I tell Pounder.

“We’ll hang up on them,” he replies. “This show is not a porn show. If you have the CEO of Ford Motor company on, you don’t want to have people from GM calling in. We just want regular people calling in. We’e not taking calls from people in the industry. We’re not taking calls from friends. This show is going to address things that regular people want to know. Not only about the industry but about dating.”

Pounder mentions that he’s also going to have Peter Kern on from the LA Health Dept. I tell him try keeping porn people from calling in to that show.

“He’s going to talk about STDs,” says Pounder who notes that porn makes up one-thousandth of one percent of the potential audience.

“Taking valuable air time on what should be done about adult movies isn’t really of interest to most people listening. They want to know when I hook up with my girlfriend tonight if I don’t wear a condom what can happen? Who’s in the risk group? What’s growing. It’s like Loveline.”

Hosting radio shows isn’t anything new for Pounder. He did a program at UC Irvine called “Real Talk with Dave Pounder.”

“We started doing that and everyone would tell me you have a lot of aptitude for this but you should get a different co-host.” Pounder says the one he had- Lucinda – was boring in a lot of listeners’ view.

With that Pounder began sending out demo tapes all around the country to see if there was any interest in him. He also put some of those demos in his porn movies. And, according to Pounder, you can also go to his site and download the demos from the college show.

“How many people can say they have an MBA, are well-spoken articulate and have experience in all facets of the adult business from production to distribution, talent and sales and yet have a mainstream appeal?” Pounder asks, noting that he’s the kind of guy who can offer a “value statement” to a company.

“My value statement to a radio station is that I’ve had radio experience in college; I have an education and all this experience in the adult business. It’s a unique thing that can’t be duplicated.”

To illustrate his point, Pounder brings up the site MILF Hunter, claiming that it’s uniquely successful not because of the MILF content but the fact that it’s driven by a unique character who’s a mainstream personality.

“He’s funny, he cracks jokes. Regular people can relate to him.”

Pounder makes a similar case on his behalf that if another radio station wanted to do something similar to his upcoming show on KLSX, they’d he hard-pressed to go to the adult business and find a similar resume.

Pounder’s already turned down lots of offers from potential guests claiming they swear too much and threaten FCC regulations.

“You can say whatever you want on Internet radio but there’s a lot of things you can’t do or can’t say on mainstream radio.”

I ask Pounder about his co-host Chase Styles who I’ve run into on a number of occasions but never really knew exactly what he did.

“Chase is one of the guys who got me into this business,” says Pounder. “If it wasn’t for Chase I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. Chase is a guy with a regular job but he’s so obsessed with the porn business, he’s at every party. He’s been in a few scenes but not as a performer. He made one movie but he’s not a director. He’s just this guy who loves porn. And he helps people out but doesn’t ask for anything in return. He’s just a very personable, all-round mainstream guy.”
