Detroit — from www.detnews.com – Two main players in the Miami Companions sex ring case — both women — won’t spend another day in prison after a federal judge today sentenced them to time served.
The sentences by U.S. District Judge Arthur Tarnow marked a stark contrast between the women charged in the case and Miami Companions co-owner Greg Carr, who was sentenced to 14 months in prison. The sentences also were far below the time sought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in a high-profile case involving sex, millions in profits and a black book stuffed with 30,000 client names.
Carr’s ex-wife, sex-ring madam Laurie Carr [pictured, was sentenced to two days in prison today. The judge ordered the time to be served concurrently and since she already spent one day in jail, she was freed, though she will spend two years on probation.
The judge said he considered her cooperation with investigators, her sense of remorse and responsibility and that she is the main provider and caretaker of a young son.
“That counts very heavily against separating you from your child,” the judge said.
Before reaching a plea deal with prosecutors, Laurie Carr, 40, faced up to 20 years in prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office urged the judge to sentence Laurie Carr to one year and a day behind bars.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Blackwell declined comment after today’s sentencing.
Greg Carr’s lawyer, however, scoffed at the sentence.
“Where’s the deterrence?” attorney Paul DeCailly said afterward.
Tarnow twice said it was unusual for such a case to be tried in federal court since there were no allegations any prostitute was forced to perform sex acts and no violence.
“This is a straight up — as far as I can tell — prostitution case that you normally see in a state district court,” Tarnow said today.
He also told Blackwell she could have saved a lot of time and effort by simply pursuing a money-laundering charge.
U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade told The Detroit News the Miami Companions case was a worthwhile use of federal resources.
“This case involved a criminal organization, commercially exploiting human beings, and we think at that level it is worthy of our resources,” she said. “We do not typically go after street-corner prostitutes.”
The case involved investigators from the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Laurie Carr, who worked as a prostitute before marrying Greg Carr and helping run Miami Companions, was emotional and begged for leniency today.
“I just ask for mercy and grace,” she said to the judge. “The lifestyle I led in the past was absolutely despicable. I hold myself to a higher accountability.”
“I’m not big on mercy and grace,” Tarnow countered. “I try to follow the law.”
Earlier today, Tarnow sentenced Michelle “Mickey” Matarazzo, a former porn star, escort and office manager of Miami Companions, to one day in prison. She also was freed immediately after sentencing because she already spent one day in jail.
“I’m very sorry. I learned my lesson and I won’t do it again,” Matarazzo, 38, told the judge.
Matarazzo pleaded guilty to conspiracy to coerce and entice prostitution in October and cooperated with investigators.
Laurie Carr helped run one of the country’s largest prostitution rings until it was busted last year in Detroit.
Her lawyer, Oscar Rodriguez, urged Tarnow to keep her out of prison so she can raise her young son.
She pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to conspiracy to coerce and entice prostitution and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Her guidelines called for 21-27 months in prison, but prosecutors were willing to recommend less time if she provided substantial help prosecuting others involved in the sex ring.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office labeled Miami Companions one of the country’s largest escort services, dispatching dozens of prostitutes to hotels and beachfront villas around the world. And Metro Detroit was one of the busiest stops on the tour.
Investigators seized a client database of more than 30,000 customers — including a rock star and a Washington lobbyist — who paid as much as $500-an-hour to have sex with Miami Companions prostitutes.
It is unclear if the book will ever be made public.
Today’s sentencings continue a trend of female Miami Companion defendants dodging prison time.
Former prostitute Nayubet Swaso received probation.
Greg Car’s girlfriend, Fabiola Contreras, a former Miami Companions prostitute, pleaded guilty in federal court last month.
She could spend six months in prison when sentenced Aug. 12. But unlike the other defendants, Contreras pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of helping to employ illegal immigrants who worked as prostitutes for Miami Companions.
