Porn Valley- Linda Lovelace claims the movie was never made, but in a surprise discovery last week, a hardcore version of Deep Throat 2, www.xxxdeepthroat.com has been uncovered.
Along with that discovery comes another one involving the original Deep Throat movie, says Paul Interlandi who has been working on restoring the original Deep Throat.
“We had the negative missing for Deep Throat for 35 years,” says Interlandi. “I found it last week.” Interlandi had also been looking for Deep Throat 2 for quite some time.
“It’s a film which according to Linda Lovelace never existed,” he says. “But she actually made it. It was even hardcore but someone broke into the editing suite during the editing process and stole the hardcore reels. You can tell they’re missing based on what you see when you see the final product. It goes right up to the sex and immediately cuts to the next scene. It makes for a jumpy film but we’ve got a three-quarter copy of it and will be coming out with it on DVD. We were hoping to take it to Hi-Def.
“We were searching for Deep Throat 2 because we want to come out with it at the same time the documentary Inside Deep Throat comes to stores around the 15th of September,” Interlandi continues. “They were sending me cans that were in a NY vault. Back in the Seventies they were worried about the federal government seizing the negatives and film and stuff, so that may have mislabeled cans on purpose to hide it.”Interlandi was also sent some cans of film which included the last negative reel of Deep Throat.
“That was supposed to have been gone,” he says. “I told them you need to send me every can out of that vault and I’ll go through it and see what we’ve got. I think we’ve got all the reels of negative. They just hadn’t sent me all of them. This can was labeled Diamo instead of Damiano. And it was listed as Unit 4. It didn’t have Deep Throat marked on it anywhere and you had to put it up to the light to tell what it was. So I went through all the cans to see what we had. Last week all the film arrived from New York and I immediately ran all the cans through a Telecine facility. There was a group of them called ‘Lost Treasure’. As I went through them, it was Deep Throat.”
What makes this discovery so marvelous, says Interlandi is that Deep Throat is probably the most valuable independent feature there is.
“We’ve shipped 20,000 units of it in the last three months,” says Interlandi. “And we’ve been sold out. We don’t have any more DVD’s, and we’ve been waiting for another 10,000 units to come from the replicators.”
Without the negative heretofore in-house, Interlandi’s had to work off one print available of Deep Throat.”It was one tore-up print that was shown at a theater,” explains Interlandi who restored the print that he had.
“We made the other release prints from this which are now all over the world. The stuff that we’re showing isn’t as good as it could have been had I the negative. So the ‘Lost Treasure’ turned out to be Deep Throat, probably the most profitable porn ever made. We’re excited that we found it. I dropped the negative off to a high-definition Telecine facility so that it can be prepared and cleaned. This morning we’re going to go in and transfer it to high-definition from the negative.”
According to Interlandi, the discovery produced the optical negative which will allow for a better sounding soundtrack. “And we also found some of the original trailers from 1972,” he adds. “At some point we’re going to have a new Deep Throat edition out from all this new stuff that we just found.”
All these discoveries were made at a film vault which was maintained by the Perainos.
“It was kind of weird,” says Interlandi. “It wasn’t like we were being given total open access to our stuff. But Ray Pistol pulled some strings and talked them into unloading it. Of course they didn’t want to give it to us because Ray was responsible for paying them every month and they weren’t too excited about losing a film vault, saying they had been storing it for 35 years. But we got it. I even suspect that they have other things they haven’t sent us. We have other films we know for sure besides Deep Throat 2, like A Dirty Western. I really need to transfer that one. And we’re hunting for other gold.”
Interlandi says that Arrow is also coming out with a new retro package of Deep Throat including a repro of the original poster.
