from www.timesrecordnews.com – When a junior in Midwestern State University’s Dillard College of Business saw a flier inviting him to a campus screening of “Deep Throat” Wednesday, he did a double take, shocked that the university would show one of the most infamous pornographic films of all time.

The flier promised games and prizes, including “Deep Throat” merchandise.

The student, who feared retribution if he revealed his name, said he was a nontraditional student, finding it difficult to pay the rising tuition at MSU.

“With everything being so gosh-darn expensive, to use my money to even light the projector to show this film aggravates me,” he said.

“This is not what I was paying the university to do. Porn by its very nature has no educational value. It teaches nothing.”

But not all agree.

Ron Fischli, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said the “Deep Throat” showing was a student-led project for of a mass communication law class that delves into First Amendment freedoms.

One year, the class showed “Debbie Does Dallas,” another porn classic.

“The First Amendment is something that’s easier to talk about and sometimes difficult to make sure we maintain,” Fischli said.

The mark of a strong university is one where controversial things happen, he said. But this screening might not be as controversial as advertised, he said. Only a portion of the movie was to be shown and would be followed by a panel discussion.

“Democracy is a very fragile thing,” Fischli said. Such an event is worrisome to someone in his position, he said, but it’s not something he would censor because it forces students to wrestle with its delicate balance and societal questions, such as the value of human dignity and the right to speak out without endangering others’ rights.

One junior taking the journalism class that is sponsoring the film belongs to the student group Mustangs 4 Christ. Despite her First Amendment rights to speak her mind, she feared revealing her name. She said she didn’t agree with the showing of the film. “The First Amendment covers a lot of things,” she said. “This pushes my moral and spiritual viewpoints.”

Johnny Bond, a campus minister with Mustangs 4 Christ who is employed through the Tenth and Broad Church of Christ, will sit on the panel after the film clip is shown. He plans to arrive after the showing, which he called “dangerous.”

“If they were to have a class where everyone smoked marijuana to see the effects of that, some would say, ‘That’s horrible,’ and others would say, ‘I’ve got to find more of that.’ To think just because these men and women are responsible enough to live on their own and go to class, and we can just show this movie without any resulting side effects is shortsighted.”

Such a film wears down social boundaries, he said, and taints how we view the opposite sex. “It idealizes how men and women should look and perform sexually, and that’s where you run into problems in marriage.”

The “Deep Throat” showing is just one event sponsored by the class to demonstrate First Amendment rights. The students recently hosted a Pro-Choice Day and, on April 20, celebrated Adolf Hitler’s birthday, serving birthday cake in the Clark Student Center.

“It just amazes me that because we have this freedom that we have to show it to these extremes,” Bond said.

He agreed to speak on the panel Wednesday so he could recommend XXXchurch.com, an advocacy group aimed at helping addicts break free of an addiction to porn.
