Dallas- Residents who tried to sign up to an online electoral roll have instead been diverted to a “Wild Girls” porn site.
Sedgemoor District Council in Somerset sent out letters to every household urging people to vote online.
But people logging on got more than they bargained for when they were diverted to the seedy sex site, which offered a free tour of explicit adult content.
The council blamed hackers for the problem and staff were sent warning letters about the lurid website and instructions on how to deal with any complaints.
“Whoever set up the pornographic website has put a link on it so people accessing our website were diverted to it,” a council spokeswoman said.
“We spoke to operators of the search engine and it took a day to resolve it.
“We did have a few letters hitting the doormat complaining about what had happened.
“But there was nothing we could do about it. They had hacked into the search engine so it was outside our hands.”
The letter from the council asked residents to send back the paper form for the electoral roll if any of their details had changed, or to re-register online if their personal details were the same.
The site was designed to encourage more people in the district to vote.
Residents are now being advised to access the site via the council’s own website.
