from www.detnews.com – A leader of an international sex ring should spend more than two years in prison for his role in a multi-million-dollar prostitution network that ran from Central America to Detroit, federal prosecutors believe.
Greg Carr, who with his ex-wife, Laurie, ran Miami Companions until it was busted last year, should be imprisoned for 27 months, the maximum allowed under his plea deal, according to a sentencing memorandum filed Thursday by federal prosecutors in Detroit.
The Carrs were indicted last year and faced multiple charges. Both reached plea deals with federal prosecutors to plead guilty to money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to persuade or entice someone to engage in prostitution.
Greg Carr, a 44-year-old Dearborn Heights native, admitted to helping run Miami Companions for nearly a decade. He will be sentenced Thursday. Laurie Carr has also pleaded guilty, but a sentencing date has not been set.
This afternoon, the first of the Miami Companions defendants will be sentenced. Nayubet Swaso, a former porn star, is expected to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Tarnow. Her attorney is asking for no prison time; prosecutors are arguing for a 10-month prison term.
Clients from across the country spent more than $167,000 for sex between March 2007 and January 2009, according to federal prosecutors.
When he pleaded guilty in February, Greg Carr told Tarnow he also oversaw the escort service’s finances, collected cash from escorts and was involved in retouching photos of escorts posted on the Miami Companions website.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has labeled Miami Companions one of the country’s largest escort services, providing prostitutes to customers at hotels and beachfront villas around the world. Metro Detroit was one of the busiest locations for its escorts.
