NY- Word that John Gotti allegedly fathered an illegitimate daughter with a jailed wiseguy’s beautiful wife apparently came straight from the Dapper Don himself in the 1980s, when state organized- crime investigators and the FBI bugged virtually every telephone on which he talked.

While eavesdropping on his phone in his Bergin Hunt and Fish Club in Ozone Park, Queens, investigators became frustrated watching him occasionally walk outside on Sunday nights to use a payphone down the street at 101st and Metropolitan avenues.

Believing Gotti was communicating mob business, they obtained a court order to bug the payphone as well.

What they heard instead was an earful of romantic patter between the powerful Gotti and his goumada – who was both the wife of an imprisoned Gambino crime-family member and the stepdaughter of one of the family’s most powerful figures.

“He would have a few cocktails and call her,” one source recalled, pointing out that the payphone-tapping ended abruptly when probers realized Gotti was using it only for “personal business.”

The reputed romance lasted several years and produced a daughter around 1987 who, one source said, was the “spitting image” of the dashing Gotti when she was a child.

And it’s clear the godfather took “great care” of mother and daughter, providing them with cash until he died of cancer in 2002, the sources said.

Now the ex-paramour – a striking 5-foot-9 brunette in her mid-40s – is separated from her husband, who remains a devoted father to his “Gotti” daughter.

In fact, the father has regularly thrown birthday parties for the daughter everyone now suspects is Gotti’s.

But without the Dapper Don’s hidden financial support, mother and daughter have moved in with her family and lead an extremely modest life.

Gotti initially met his girlfriend when he was a rising star in the early 1980s and aligned with the Manhattan faction of the Gambino crime family that operated out of the Ravenite Social Club.

Their friendship blossomed into something more, which angered her relatives in the crime family, although they were helpless to stop it because of Gotti’s power.

But as the law-enforcement noose began to descend on Gotti, the relationship cooled to protect everyone involved.

The sources say Gotti and his former lover believed their secret would die with him. They were wrong.
