from www2.journalnow.com – A Surry Central High School teacher was arrested this week and charged with having a sexual relationship with a 19-year-old student.

Tiffany Suzanne Davis, 23, was arrested Tuesday and released on a $10,000 bond. She’s accused of having off-campus sex with one of Central’s male students.

Ordinarily a sexual relationship between adults wouldn’t interest law enforcement. But North Carolina law makes it illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student who attends his or her school, regardless of the student’s age or consent, unless the two are married.

“The only offense … is because they actually were student and teacher at the same school,” Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said.

Administrators at the school in Dobson reported the relationship to the sheriff’s office Monday afternoon, and the case was wrapped up by Tuesday afternoon, Atkinson said. The investigation showed that the pair had a relationship from mid-November to mid-December, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

“(Davis) was very cooperative and very remorseful,” Atkinson said.

Davis’ status with the school system was unclear Thursday. School is out for the holiday break, and attempts to reach administrators were not successful.

Reached by telephone Thursday, Davis declined to comment on the case.
