Beverly Hills, California – July will mark thirty-five years since Larry Flynt set the adult entertainment world on its head and shook up the national dialogue. Originally distributed as a small newsletter intended to tell his customers where they could find their favorite dancers at his clubs, HUSTLER’s beginnings were humble but ambitious.
HUSTLER became a national magazine in 1974 and almost immediately emerged as a polarizing force in America’s culture wars. From convention-wrecking pictorials to cutting-edge humor and political coverage, Flynt’s magazine may not have been everyone’s taste but it could not be ignored.
Following his near-deadly shooting in 1978, Flynt continued to push against convention (and nearly countless obscenity raps). After the infamous 1983 “Falwell-Campari” parody, Flynt fought all the way to the Supreme Court and won, not just for himself but for all Americans, First Amendment protection that expanded the parameters of free speech.
As raw as ever, the 35th Anniversary issue looks back at some of the magazine’s greatest hits from decades of cartoons to wild pictorials like Trina The Three-Breasted Wonder and the Scratch ‘n’ Sniff centerfold. While looking back, HUSTLER continues to move forward with the hottest spreads, fearless political commentary and investigative reporting.
HUSTLER may shock and offend but its continued existence is a reminder of the triumph of American ideals over intolerance. And whether you respect him, like him or hate his guts – Larry Flynt is owed a legitimate debt of gratitude to our American way of life.
Mamie Van Doren Bares All To Hustler:
Mamie Van Doren [pictured] is stretched on the beach. Her blonde hair framing her face like a wreath. Sand sticks to her torso and exposed breasts. Her legs are crossed barely maintaining her modesty. She is 78 years old. And she looks great.
Discovered at sixteen by Howard Hughes the night she was crowned Miss Palm Springs, Van Doren was part of that troika of platinum dreams girls of the era that included Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield.
In great shape and fine health in her 70’s, Van Doren continues to live life on her own terms. And that means having no problem appearing nude in HUSTLER.
“I never considered myself beautiful and never really thought about it”, Van Doren says. “I try to stay healthy because I think beauty is from within. It’s how you treat yourself and others that makes you beautiful.”
For more from Van Doren including her affair with Rock Hudson (“We ended up having sex on the floor of my parents’ house”), her films and her own wine label check out the profile in the 35th Anniversary edition of HUSTLER magazine. On Sale now.
