LEXINGTON, Ky. – After a yearlong battle with city officials, a Hustler Hollywood store in Lexington is open for business.

Jimmy Flynt, brother of Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, debuted the shop Friday morning after passing an initial inspection by the city.

“They told me I was ‘significantly compliant,’ whatever that means,” Jimmy Flynt said.

The store, near Interstate 75 and Winchester Road, has magazines and a cafe with cheesecake, coffee and tea. It also offers items like leather whips, kinky lingerie, erotic books and adult games.

City officials didn’t want videos, sex toys or nudity in the store. They made Flynt cover up several ceramic figures of women with exposed breasts.

Many customers who visited on opening day asked Flynt for an autograph and purchased candles or T-shirts. There were no protesters.

Aaron Snapp, 23, described it as “extremely classy – for the type of store it is.”

When Flynt proposed an adult bookstore and adult video store last year, the city board of adjustment denied him a permit. His attorneys filed an appeal in court, and Flynt hinted in January that he might open a juice bar with nude dancers.

In March, Lexington’s council unanimously approved a zoning amendment to prohibit adult bookstores and adult entertainment at interstate interchanges.

Flynt said Friday he would continue “marketing and merchandising the store as it is.”

He also has stores in Cincinnati; Monroe, Ohio; San Diego; and Hollywood, Calif. Next week, Flynt will open up a Hustler store in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
