from www.oregonlive.com – A Bend man was arrested hours after he tried stealing money from an adult video store during the weekend so he could go to jail, police say.
Lucas Ray Evans, 30, was inside Imagine That at 197 N.E. 3rd St. for about an hour when he pointed a cylinder-like object at employees around 1 a.m. Saturday and demanded money, said Sgt. Jason Maniscalco, a Bend police spokesman.
Evans told employees he was robbing the store because he wanted to go back to jail, but did not announce why, Maniscalco said.
The employees told Evans to leave. He grabbed an envelope with cash on the counter instead and fled.
Other customers spotted Evans and tackled him as he ran, Maniscalco said. The money was returned and Evans left without police being called.
Evans was detained by Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies nearly nine hours later in connection with a separate investigation and mentioned the incident at the adult store. Bend police investigated Evans’ claim, he was soon arrested and booked into the Deschutes County Jail.
Evans appeared in Deschutes County Circuit Court on Monday on a robbery charge. He is scheduled to appear again on Friday.
Court records show Evans has a series of convictions that have led to jail time in Deschutes County between 2002 and 2013 for charges including theft, assault, DUII and resisting arrest.
Evans was most recently convicted in January for theft and was sentenced to 30 days in jail with credit for time already served.
