Porn Valley – The Sports Swami interviewed India recently at the AEE Expo where she was signing at the Video Team booth. Asked how big Video Team was for all the African American and Hispanic women in the adult industry, India answered that the company was down for everybody.
“It represents black women in a positive way,” she said. “It’s a big company that makes us look good. There’s a lot of companies in adult but Video team has been one of the companies that has made African Americans and minority races stand out more.”
An accomplished singer, India was asked why she bothers with adult at all instead of singing full time. “You have a beautiful voice,” Swami observed. India said she’s been in music since she was young. “But I wanted to take a break because I had some bad polyps. So I came here and consequently I’m back in [music] because that’s my first love.”
India said she didn’t want to do just one or two things. She wanted to do a lot of things. “You’ve got to be everything,” she said. “Life is short.” Regarding the possibility of winning a Grammy, India said she was looking for a company and a record deal/label that would push her all the way. “That’s why we haven’t signed yet,” she says. “We’re looking for the company that will believe in us so we can get those Grammys and be like a Destiny’s Child.”
India was asked what makes the industry so great for her. “I like the energy. I like the attention and I like the performing,” she answered. “I like when I do my scenes and put my all into it because I feel like I’m giving someone that attention and giving them joy. I feel like I’m doing something to help couples, and girls and guys out there. I like it.”
Swami told India that Mercedes Ashley was particularly flattering in her assessments of her. “She said you’re somebody out there to look for.”
“When someone like that says it, it’s great,” said India who looked up to performers before her like Vanessa del Rio. Asked if she had to deal with any kind of racism in the industry, India said she’s stayed away from such controversies.
“For some reason I never got caught up in that. Everybody treated me like the blond girl. They saw my personality first. They saw that I was going to work hard. My rates were the same because I wouldn’t go for anything less. If it was anything less, I’m not going to do it. I haven’t experienced it. I don’t know if my peers have, but I haven’t experienced it.”
On the subject of stereotypical titles in adult packaging, India said black talent can’t take those stereotyped roles being offered. “We can’t be in these movies because if we did them, they’d keep going. So for me, I’ve kept myself out of those types of roles. That’s why I like Video Team. They promote black women in a positive way where we’re not just ghetto or not just bitches on a bus. We do have class and not being just ethnic. Black is beautiful. Minorities are beautiful.”
India said she’d support her kids on anything they decided to do and if her daughter wanted to do porn, so be it. “Whether they’re gay, straight or whatever they’re still my kids. The same with my mom. My mom cares about me and supports anything I do,” she continued. “I would do the same for my children. If my daughter wanted to do this, then I’d be the right person to direct her in the right way if she decided to make this a career choice. But I would make sure she was a certain age. She’d have to 21 or over. Yes, I would like her to do something else but if that’s what she wanted to do.
“As far as this being degrading to women,” she went on to say, “I feel everybody’s an individual. It’s not degrading to me. I feel that I’m empowered by anything I do.” India also said she was working on starting up a company this year.
