Kentucky Woman Busted for Selling Sex Items

MADISONVILLE, Kentucky — When Madisonville police began investigating a woman accused of illegally re-selling government-issued baby formula, they found out she was selling X-rated items illegally as well.

Officers said that when they entered Kim Potter’s consignment shop, Second Image, to get the milk, they found she was also selling adult sex items without a license.

Upstairs, there’s a room with a sign that reads “adult novelties and more.” Inside are X-rated items including “from magazines to DVDs, videos, various toys, I guess you’d call them. Things like that,” said Madisonville Detective Matt Conley.

Until Tuesday, customers could browse the clothes racks at Second Image, or walk in the X-rated room. Now, officers have made the room off limits.

Kim Potter doesn’t have a license to sell adult items. “I didn’t know anything about an ordinance or special license or anything like that,” she told 6 News.

At first, police went to the store to investigate a complaint, that Potter was re-selling government baby formula. “It’s just regular baby formula. But it’s clearly marked on the can not for resale,” Conley said.

Officers told Potter that selling the milk is illegal. She voluntarily gave up three and a half cases.

But Potter and her husband said they can’t understand why they need a license to run the adult store. “Most of the video stores in town have back rooms where adult material is kept and sold at a later time,” Potter’s husband said. “It’s the same difference,” Potter added.

But the difference according to officers, is that in order to get a license, stores must meet certain criteria. One is that children can’t have access to the store.

Potter said that while children may come into Second Image, they don’t get into the room for adults. “Everything is in a brown bag. You can’t see through it, nothing. The kids don’t know.”

Kim Potter has agreed to stop selling adult items until her court date on April 27th.

Investigators said they’re still talking to the district attorney to determine what charges Potter may face for re-selling the formula.

Potter has run Second Image for four years and the adult shop for six months. She said she’s now trying to get a license for the adult shop.
