Salt Lake City- One junior-high teacher is behind bars and another could be arrested after Bountiful police learned they both had sexual relations with the same 13-year-old student.
One of the teachers organized a meeting with police on Thursday and told them she had been having sex with the boy from October 2007 until December 2008, said Bountiful police spokesman Lt. Randy Pickett. She also told police the boy began having sexual relations with another teacher in December 2008.
That second teacher — 39-year-old math teacher Valynne Bowers [pictured] — was arrested and booked into the Davis County jail on Friday, Pickett said, adding that Bowers acknowledged she was having sex with the boy.
The teacher who told police of the crimes resigned on Wednesday, Pickett said. Police said they expected to arrest her as well, but they had not yet done so Friday afternoon. Pickett said police would not release her name until she had been arrested.
“So far, there is nothing to indicate that there are any other students involved, or any other faculty or employees involved,” Pickett said, adding that the two teachers did not know until recently that the other was having sex with the boy.
“They didn’t have any idea what was going on,” Pickett said. “It was just a coincidence.”
None of the sex acts occurred at the school, as far as police could tell, Pickett said. Instead, the teachers would go with the student to homes, parking lots or parks in Bountiful,
Bowers is being held in the Davis County jail on suspicion of forcible sodomy and rape.
