Here’s a shocker. But a well-deserved one. Johnny Depp got nominated for Best Actor in Pirates of the Caribbean. Nominated for Best Picture are The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King; Seabiscuit, Lost in Translation, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and Mystic River.

Sorry, guys, but the category we would have nominated Mystic River for was the lamest resolution of an intriguing crime along the lines of the butler did it. All we can say is The Last Samurai got robbed.

Now we got a moral dil-enema. Had Johnny Depp not been added to the Best Actor nominations mix, we would have given it to the very scary Sean Pean in a walk for Mystic River. But Penn’s politics might come into the picture, so to speak…
