From 2004 to 2008, there were 2,847 sexually transmitted diseases among 1,884 performers in the hard-core porn industry in L.A. County.

Experts say AIDS is making a comeback in the industry, too.

The numbers are staggering, even for people who have sex for a living. But why should it concern you? After all, having sex with a porn star is a fantasy, right? (Well, unless Tiger’s little black book fell out of his golf bag while he was playing in Ridgewood last fall.) Because having sex with someone who had sex with someone who had sex with someone who had sex with a porn actor is less far-fetched.

The reason for the STD plague: Porn stars are not using condoms.

And it’s your fault. Okay, not your fault (because you, of course, don’t watch pornography), but the fault of your neighbor with the huge smut library. Because, apparently, safe sex doesn’t sell. When actors wore condoms during a crusade about a decade ago, sales were, uh, soft. So the industry opted for more stringent testing. Critics say it hasn’t been effective.

The rubber is about to meet the road. The Los Angeles City Council is exploring the feasibility of conditioning the issuance of film permits to the use of condoms in adult film productions. Says one council member: “They should be wearing condoms. Period.”

Some say this is no different than requiring construction workers to wear helmets. Of course, if he’s a construction worker in a porn film, the helmet is optional. Soon, the condom might not be.
