San Antonio- A new restaurant on the West Side is causing a lot of controversy for serving up something a little too sexy.
People living near the La Mariposa Cafe on Guadalupe Street are complaining the wait staff’s lap dancing is a distraction. Now, the city’s cracking down on the restaurant.
The owner of the cafe now says she doesn’t want to cause anymore trouble in this community.
La Mariposa’s a corner cafe that’s become pretty popular with many men.
“I like the girls here. They are hot man,” said customer Jarrod Zigmond.
But it’s the seductive dances the waitresses were serving up that have protesters saying, “Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! Mariposa’s got to go!”
It’s also why Councilwoman Lourdes Galvan is stepping in.
“The offensiveness of dancing, laptop dancing is not what the neighborhood is looking for,” said Galvan.
Galvan and some of La Mariposa’s neighbors believe the restaurant’s pushing the limits too close to adult entertainment.
Mariposa owner Miriam Luna says her staff’s not doing anything against the law. But she’s now promised Councilwoman Galvan waitresses will no longer give customers sexy dances, and they’ll stop performing in the stairway.
“We did make a mistake, okay,” said one of the waitresses. “And I’m sorry, right, if we offended somebody.”
For now the owner of the cafe said she doesn’t want to be a nuisance in the neighborhood, and she’s doing what she can to make her business survive.
News 4 found out La Mariposa does have a permit for live entertainment, but city workers say that only allows live bands to perform.
Councilwoman Galvan says she’s supporting a current proposal that makes city code clearly define the difference between restaurants and strip clubs.
