from www.dailymail.co.uk – A porn star’s appearance at a quiet, New England school was ruffling more than a few feathers.
Jiz Lee has performed in over 100 films, some of which will be screened Friday evening at Williams College, one of the most prestigious schools in the country.
Several alumni expressed concern about the appearance, questioning the academic value of pornography in the Massachusetts classroom.
Lee was invited by the Queer Student Union to discuss her experience with porn and its relationship to personal empowerment.
Lee, a transgender star, discussed the visibility of the queer and trans communities in adult film as well as self-love, body positivity and consent.
‘I think the biggest question right now is a matter of whether the event has academic merit or whether it has social merit,’ said Marina Bousa, a junior studying anthropology, to Fox News.
She said that Williams invited a wide variety of lecturers from all walks of life, often pushing the boundaries of its students.
This event, she said, was in a grey area.
‘I can see why the event would be an exciting opportunity for that, but, on the other hand, I question its academic value.’
Williams College spokeswoman Angela Schaeffer said complaints about the event have been ‘few in number.’
Roughly half a dozen alumni and one parent had voiced their concerns, she said, but she assured the Mail Online that the funding did not come from tuition.
The money for Lee’s lecture comes from a specific endowment that funds education about human sexuality and orientation issues.
The entire weekend featured events sponsored by the Dively Committee for Human Sexuality and Diversity’s 20th anniversary.
‘Colleges have all kinds of events,’ Jim Kolesar, the assistant to the president for public affairs at Williams College, said to Fox News.
‘Some of them are provocative and challenging… those who don’t want to take advantage of the opportunity, they don’t have to.’
Despite the outcry, some students are genuinely excited to hear Lee speak.
‘I think that pornography is an issue, is a medium that deserves critical analysis, just like many other topics at Williams College,’ Haley Eagon, a junior pursuing women’s studies, said to Fox News.
