UK: Holyrood officials last night launched an investigation after explicit porn channels were found on the parliament’s in-house broadcasting system.
MSPs and staff were yesterday offered a choice of seven pay-per-view adult channels, including Red Hot Wives, Playboy TV, Television X, and Spice Extreme.
For those seeking more wholesome viewing, a Disney channel also appeared on the £660,000 system for the first time.
The parliament last night said the channels appeared to have been added to the TV feed by mistake, and the supplierhad been asked to remove them.
Adverts for the adult channels could be seen on around 320 TVs throughout the Holyrood complex, including sets for all 129 MSPs.
Besides live coverage from Holyrood’s main chamber and its committee rooms, the Telewest-supplied feed also carries some regular TV and radio stations. However, it is supposed to be a “bespoke” system, to which no other channels can be added.
Sandra White, the SNP member on Holyrood’s equal opportunities committee, which is looking at the harm done by pornography, said it was “disgraceful” the channels had slipped through.
“There has to be some kind of inquiry. People might have thought it was parliamentarians accessing porn. The integrity of the parliament is important.”
She added visiting children might also have seen the TVs. “We sometimes have interns who are under 18 and they might have seen this material on the screen. It doesn’t say much about the security that this has happened,” she said.
Additional story: ENGINEERS were today investigating a glitch which appeared to put porn on to the Scottish Parliament’s TV system.
Adverts for adult channels ranging from Red Hot Wives to Playboy TV and Spice Extreme began to appear on 320 TV monitors at the Holyrood complex over the weekend.
When viewers scrolled through the list of channels, they appeared as options but could not be accessed.
Holyrood’s TVs show a range of channels, and also provide coverage of parliamentary debates and committee meetings.
A Holyrood spokeswoman said the channel labels had been added by mistake to the TV feed and supplier Telewest had been asked to remove them.
“The channels have been removed,” she said.
“There is no way anybody could watch porn in parliament.”
The glitch meant that at 10pm last night ten-minutes “teasers” would have appeared for the adult channels. But the system was taken down at 9.30pm to prevent that, the spokeswoman said.
