Porn Convention Draws Controversy in Houston

Houston- There’s an XXX-rated controversy in Houston that opened Wednesday — a pornography convention. While many call it nothing but filth, sleaze and garbage, organizers call it much more than that.

Every year in Las Vegas in January there is a large adult film convention. That’s where all the stars of the industry and the people behind those films get together and give fans a chance to meet a lot of those people in person. This week the same thing is happening on a much smaller scale in a hotel near Hobby Airport. It’s making news because this is the first time anything like that has ever happened in Houston.

Steve Seidman [pictured] is a busy man. He’s the one who’s brought the first-ever pornographic convention to Houston.

He said, “We figured this would be a great way to give a present back to the city, by bringing in 30 adult stars to entertain them and meet and greet the people.”

In addition to an exposition on Thursday and Friday, there are nightly events at area adult clubs. They all feature 30 adult film stars, including Summer Haze, who says she’s unsure of Houston’s reaction.

She said, “Some people are a little scared, and some people are going to be curious. So I think we’ll have a lot of curious people that are going to come down and see what’s going on.”

The organizers expect protests. They expect critics of their four-day, four-night event. But they say they have a lot more support here in Houston than most would ever admit.

“A lot of people are afraid to admit that we watch it,” Seidman said. “But you know as well as anybody, in the privacy of my home, I can watch whatever I want, and most people do.”

The promoter expected a lot of people to be protesting outside the hotel, but so far that hasn’t happened. Event organizers want to promote a positive image and help people, so the proceeds from Saturday night’s pajama party will be donated to breast cancer research.
