South Central Los Angeles – I picked up the phone Saturday night and the first words I hear: “Hey, Kid, it’s Margold.”
My first thought in hearing his voice was: What did I do to piss Bill off this time?
Bill asked if I had noticed that AdultFYI ran two stories concerning hairy balls this week. Slightly confused, I said that I only remember the one lighthearted story about naming a public building in Fort Wayne after their former mayor, Harry Baals.

He told me the other ‘balls’ story concerned the one related to the adult film Disco Dolls in Hot Skin being shown this weekend at the University of Iowa www.adultfyi.com/read.php?ID=46637
Being somewhat familiar with the history of this industry, I still didn’t get the connection. Bill then commenced to inform me that not only was he the male lead in Disco Dolls in Hot Skin, but in fact his character’s name was you guessed it, Harry Baulls.
Bill then began telling me about the making of this film back in 1977.
He relates that during one sex scene when he was engaged with a lovely co-star, the legendary John Holmes stood over them both. As Bill looked up at Holmes, he felt slightly less of a man as he saw the King’s massive dick swinging like an elephant’s trunk only a few short feet away from Bill’s head.
Along with Bill and John Holmes, the film’s cast is a veritable who’s who in the annals of legendary porn history: Serena, Mike Ranger, Leslie Bovee and Uschi Digard round out the cast.
Curious to see how America’s Heartland would take to having this film shown at the University of Iowa, he found the website in which this story was originally posted and began reading the comments. After reading some of the feedback, and not one to hold his own opinion in check, Bill posted the following:
‘Although the legendary Holmes delivers a massive “guest starring” performance…I had the great pleasure of being one of the “HOT SKIN” leads as the character of Harry Baulls. The highly entertaining film is a perfect example of what was being made during The Golden Days of XXX. It is historically relevant, and if it were torn from the fabric of American filmmaking because it offends certain delicate Iowan sensibilities, it would as silly as heeding the words of “The Music Man” who wanted to close down all the pool halls in River City. Or as I put it during my testimony in front of The Meese Commission in 1985…
“In a society that is drug-infested, violence-wracked and polluted by chemical greed…no one has ever died from an overdose of Pornography.”
Have fun on BOTH Friday and Saturday evening…as I’m sure that you’ll need to watch the film twice…just to make sure that you saw “everything.”’

Love him or hate him, Bill is a fascinating character and the stories he tells about the early years of this industry are phenomenal. Over the last few recent years this industry has lost many people who helped build its foundation: Jim Holliday, John Leslie, Ron Sullivan, Marilyn Chambers, Jamie Gillis, the list goes on. Once Bill goes, he’ll take a hell of a lot of this industry’s history with him.
