Attorneys for actor Robert Blake have filed papers suggesting that his wife’s real killer is a small-time robber known to work the area.
Blake’s accusation became public yesterday when prosecutors countered, scoffing at the accusation but agreeing to turn over documents.
Blake is charged with killing Bonny Lee Bakley outside Vitello’s Restaurant on May 4, 2001. Like O.J. Simpson, he has vowed to find his wife’s killer. But unlike Simpson, he has actually named a suspect.
Blake’s motion seeks information on Kevin London, who is in prison for armed robberies, some of which occurred near Vitello’s around the time of Bakley’s murder.
The court papers also ask that the murder and conspiracy charges against Blake be dismissed.
“We have a witness who says she saw a black man fitting London’s description near the restaurant the night of the murder,” Blake’s attorney, Thomas Mesereau, told the Daily News. He declined to give any details about the witness.
But the prosecution counters that London’s girlfriend has sworn he was not in the area at the time of the murder. And Deputy District Attorney Greg Dohi wrote in court papers that London, who is black, committed his robberies with a pellet gun, while Blake’s wife was shot twice with a revolver.
“Big deal,” Mesereau said. “They have a statement from London’s girlfriend who says she thinks he wasn’t in Studio City that night. It’s the same old story with them. They look at evidence and interpret it any way that serves their case.”
