Hollywood- Director-producer Rob Cohen [pictured] and former Revolution Studios partner Todd Garner have acquired the option rights to the Russ Meyer bio Big Bosoms and Square Jaws: The Biography of Russ Meyer, King of the Sex Film. Cohen is expected to direct the film version of the book, which was written by Jimmy McDonough.
Meyer, of course, was the helmer behind many titillating tit-tinged tales of the ’60s and ’70s such as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Supervixens. He also directed Beyond the Valley of the Dolls in 1970, which was written by Roger Ebert. Meyer started his professional career as a documenter of décolletage as a photographer for Playboy in the ’50s before parlaying that niche into low budget exploitation films, and then eventually creating, essentially, his own mini-genre.
“Most importantly, this is a love story about Meyer and his centerfold wife and the way they worked together to create themselves as much as the movies they were making,” Cohen tells Variety. “It’s a love story couched in the staid quality of the 1950s, when this guy came along and had a new vision of what movies could do. Ultimately, he was begged by Richard Zanuck and David Brown at 20th Century Fox as a savior to direct Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.”
Meyer died last September at age 82, hopefully with images of buxomy babes dancing in his head.
