NYC- Now Russell really has something to Crowe about.
The Manhattan DA’s Office gave the “Gladiator” star a sweetheart deal for hurling a phone at a Mercer Hotel clerk’s head. He’ll plead guilty to misdemeanor assault today and will receive no jail time or probation, sources close to the case said.
He will be released with only time served – the night he spent in the clink for the June 6 incident. He admittedly flung a vase and a phone at clerk Nestor Estrada [pictured] in the SoHo hotel.
Crowe said he flew off the hook when he was unable to get a phone line to Australia.
The New Zealand-born actor was originally charged with second-degree assault, a felony that would have seriously jeopardized his visa status in the United States.
It also could have meant up to seven years in jail for Crowe.
He will now cop to third-degree misdemeanor assault, which classifies the attack as reckless or negligent, the sources said.
He could have faced up to a year in jail on the lesser charge.
A spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office declined to comment on the case.
Crowe and Estrada’s lawyers did return calls for comment.
The British press reported Crowe offered Estrada up to $11 million to stop cooperating with prosecutors.
Lawyers on all sides have previously denied those charges.
Although Crowe is expected to walk tomorrow, he may have to leave the country, since any criminal activity, not just felonies, can endanger his right to own a home here.
“Convictions involving moral turpitude can result in a review of immigration status,” said Marc Raimondi, spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement arm.
But Raimondi added, “When that’s said and done, we’ll review it at that point, but we’re not focusing undue attention on his situation. We’ll deal with it appropriately – I don’t think we’re going to be waiting outside of the courthouse for him.”
Crowe has reportedly said that he feels it might be time to leave the States.
“Maybe it’s better I don’t travel to America. Maybe it’s better I don’t work in the area of the business that attracts so many flies,” he told an Australian magazine in September.
On the “The Late Show with David Letterman” in June, Crowe called the “spectacularly stupid” attack “the most shameful situation I’ve ever gotten into in my life.”
