Commentary: I’m no fan of the Aids Healthcare Foundation [AHF]. I believe their motives extend further than just their desire for Cal/OSHA to implement a mandatory industry wide condoms only policy.
However, I take issue with FSC executive director Diane Duke when she was quoted this week saying, “This is a workplace safety issue. AHF has no presence in the industry and, therefore, is not a stakeholder. Stakeholders include performers, producers and individuals who work on or around production sets.”
Duke’s definition of ‘stakeholder’ is correct but not quite complete. It is also defined as: a person, group, organization, or system who affects or CAN BE affected by an organization’s actions.
My point is this: Once an actor leaves a set after possibly catching an STD and unwittingly engages in sex with a civilian be it for money or not, that action instantly becomes a public health issue. Therefore, the Aids Healthcare Foundation, as members of the public, does have a stake in what happens in the industry.
