Massachusetts- from www.bizjournals.com – Global Internet domain-name broker Sedo Inc. has officially set a Guinness World Record with the sale of sex.com. Based in Cologne, Germany, Sedo has its U.S. headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
The salacious web address sold last November to Clover Holdings for $13 million, securing its place in the record books as the most expensive domain name on record, according to London-based Guinness World Records. However, sex.com may have failed to break its own record in the November sale. The web address’ original owner, Escom LLC, was widely reported to have paid $14 million for the domain name in 2006. Sedo brokered the sale for Escom as part of the Calabasas, Calif. company’s bankruptcy proceeding and, in a press release, pegged the 2006 deal at $11.5 million.
Sedo announced the honor in a press release today; the company had maintained since last fall that the $13 million deal was the Internet’s largest. The release also touted the company’s 10-year history, and said it has to date brokered $400 million worth of domain names, including “seven-figure” deals for marquee web addresses like vodka.com, pizza.com and russia.com.
Little is known about Clover Holdings – except that the company is based in the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Currently, the web itself is home to an ad-covered holding page. …
