Today is Shelley Lubben scrapbook day. After MSNBC ran its article on condoms this week, www.adultfyi.com/read.php?ID=41516 the Internet’s been glorifying the anti-porn Lubben with exposure. Here’s a sample:

On her website, Lubben lists some alarming statistics about adult film stars. She claims that more than half have herpes, many suffer from other sexually transmitted diseases, and most of those infected are female (70 percent).
She also notes a number of suicide and drug-related deaths among porn stars.
Lubben has called for the mandatory use of condoms during the filming of porn scenes.

A video on Lubben’s site in honor of porn stars who’ve died features images of an actress named Savannah who apparently died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound, and another, Chloe, who died from liver failure due to alcohol and drug abuse. The piece goes on and on, displaying glamorous photos of young women who did not make it out of the porn industry alive.
Shelley was most recently part of a movement to request that condoms be mandatory for performers when filming pornography. Lubben’s website boasts a list of scary statistics: 66% of porn stars have Herpes, which is non-curable, 70% of sexually transmitted infections in the industry occur in women, at least 25 cases of HIV among porn stars have been reported in the last six years and Chlamydia and Gonorrhea among porn actors and actresses is 10x greater than that of LA County 20-24 year olds.
Frightening statistics like these are part of the reason Lubben is pushing to make condom use mandatory in her former industry.
Still, many porn industry insiders are against the mandatory use of condoms, saying that porn consumers don’t want to see them. They also say they follow a rigorous STD testing system for their performers so that condom use isn’t necessary. (via ChicagoPressRelease.com)

I have a lot of respect for Shelley Lubben’s choice to speak out against an industry that she used to be a part of. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for her to give up her wealthy and exotic lifestyle, but she has the potential to help so many people now. Let’s just hope they listen.
