SAN ANTONTIO, TX – Tejano music star Jay Pérez was arrested late Friday on a charge of sexual assault of a minor, just minutes before he was to take the stage at Graham Central Station.
He was out on $50,000 bond an hour after he was arrested.
The charge stems from allegations made in November 2000 by a then-15-year-old girl who reported “numerous incidences” of sexual contact with the singer, said police spokesman Richard Solis.
The girl was “an acquaintance of people who know him,” the spokesman said.
Solis refused to release further details of the allegations, noting the girl was a minor at the time.
The arrest warrant was issued Wednesday.
Regarding the length of time between filing the report and issuing the arrest warrant, Solis replied, “We conducted an investigation in a timely manner (and) turned it over to the district attorney’s office in 2001.”
A spokesperson from the district attorney’s office was not available.
Pérez, nicknamed “La Voz,” sang with Latin Breed and David Lee Garza y Los Musicales before he began a solo career in 1992.
His latest album, “Hombre En La Luna,” (Man in the Moon) was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the best Tejano album category this year.
Perez, who is married, is a San Antonio native.
