PA- She’s had roles in more than 600 films such as “Little Red Rides the Hood 4,” “You’ve Got a Mother Thing Cumming 2” and played the role of Hillary Clinton in “Who’s Nailin’ Paylin?”

It’s no secret that Nina Hartley has a seasoned background in pornography. But, when she came to SRU [Slippery Tock University] on Monday, she also spoke about how being a porn star, for her, goes hand-in–hand with being a feminist.

“I’m a feminist because I live my life on my own terms,” Hartley said. “I don’t need approval. It’s something I want to do. You don’t have to agree with me.”

Hartley, 49, lives in Los Angeles, Calif. and has a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She had her first job as a stripper in 1983 and did her first pornographic film in 1984. Less than a year away from being 50, she still films three to five scenes every month.

On- and off-camera, Hartley said that she has had sex with over 1,000 people, men and women.

“And I was sober for all of it,” she said. “I’m a freak, and I’m okay with that.”

She said the reason she decided to become a porn star is because she has an idea about sex that she wants to share.

“I want to have lots of sex without a [fully] monogamous relationship, and I want to be with chicks,” she said. “I am not monogamous. I am bisexual. I am kinky.”

Hartley said that meeting other bisexual women can be challenging.

“With porn, she shows up unwrapped,” she said. “The negotiation was taken care of by someone else.”

She said what she likes about pornography is that it doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. She said that it’s a part of pop culture, and that most of it’s supposed to be funny.

She admits however, that sex isn’t the most dignified of behaviors.

“It’s never ironic,” she said. “It’s goofy and stupid. [After watching porn] you’re either going to say, ‘I want to try that’ or ‘I’ll never try that.’ There is always eject, and there is always fast forward.”

Hartley explained that what makes her a feminist is she gets to decide how she wants to live her life. She said that pornography split feminism down the middle.

“What is feminist [about me] is how I learned to accept myself how I am,” she said. “The fact that other women are attacking me for being a feminist shows how off-course [feminism has] gone in the last 30 years. Their views are old fashioned, but they put them in new age terms.”

She said that women who attack her for saying she is a feminist porn star have hijacked what feminism actually is, and that she has received more discrimination from women than men.

“Because I’m a feminist, I know I can be anything I want to be,” she said. “I want to be a sex entertainer. I live my life on my own terms and won’t let your disproval rule my life.”

During her presentation, she strayed from her talk of pornography and feminism to encourage students who chose to have sex to do so safely.

“I’ll be the first person to say have all the sex you want,” Hartley said. “But don’t do it drunk. I’m not trying to be a buzz kill, but the reason that I’ve been having sex for so long is because I’ve never gone home with someone drunk.”

She said sex is wonderful, but it does contain danger. She said that it’s important for students to be with people that make them feel comfortable. She told students to never say “maybe” when they mean “no.”

“If you’re scared, be scared,” she said. “If you’re nervous, be nervous. If you want to go home, go home. Whatever your boundary is, know it, own it, speak it. It puts you in the power position.”

Hartley also went over body image, and why all girls should be comfortable with themselves, and told them to dress how they feel comfortable.

“As you can probably guess, I’m not a super model,” she said. “I grew up looking at classical art. I like round girls. I like girls that look like girls.”

Hartley married her second husband, Ernest Greene, who works behind the scenes in the adult business, in 2003. She said one of the things that she loves about Greene is that he is comfortable with her lifestyle, since he is in the business too.

Even though they are both swingers, she said that they are “emotionally” monogamous.

“I’m only in love with my husband,” she said. “[Sex with love], it’s the best. Oh my God it’s the best. He loves me, gets me and cares about me. He has my back. We accept each other for who we are.”

As far as children go, Hartley said that she’s not interested.

“I sometimes joke with my family that at the factory, they forgot to wind my biological clock,” she said.

Hartley said she made the choice to not have kids when she decided to do her first adult movie.

“I couldn’t do that to my kids,” she said. “Kids at school are mean; parents at the PTO are mean.”

Hartley, whether her speeches inspire or offend, will continue to go from place to place talking about her diverse life and educating people about her views of feminism (in-between filming movies like “Mini Van Mom” and “Sorority Stewardess,” that is).
