Stern’s ‘Anti-Censor’ Combs for Controversy

WWW- Fresh out of college, Doug Goodstein landed a job any journalism student would kill for. As a desk assistant at ABC News, he sat just a few feet away from Peter Jennings. He went to the 1992 political conventions, worked on “Good Morning America” and hobnobbed with the media elite.

But he was bored. “I never laughed,” he says. “The people were just way too intense.”

So he sent resumes to every network and production company in New York City. One meeting was with Scott Einzinger, a producer at the entertainment cable channel E!, who said he was working on a secret project and might have something for Mr. Goodstein: E! was launching a televised version of Howard Stern’s radio show and needed producers.

“I remember celebrating like I just won the Stanley Cup,” says Mr. Goodstein, who grew up in the same Long Island neighborhood as Mr. Stern and was a longtime fan.

Initially, Mr. Goodstein worked as a field producer. That meant going out with “Stuttering” John Melendez, a longtime Stern cast member whose forte was asking celebrities embarrassing questions. Two weeks into his job, he was dragged on-air after Mr. Stern suspected him of creating an unpleasant situation in the bathroom. Of course, being chided on the air is a badge of honor — Mr. Stern’s way of saying you’re part of the gang.

Now, almost 12 years later, Mr. Goodstein, 35, is executive producer of Howard Stern On Demand, a pay cable channel devoted to the shock jock that premiered Nov. 18. The launch of the on-demand channel coincides with Mr. Stern’s move to Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. Like satellite radio, video-on-demand is a regulation free environment where Mr. Stern can be as outrageous — and uncensored — as he wants to be.

For years, Mr. Stern has battled with bosses and the Federal Communications Commission who tried — often in vain — to tone down his racy on-air content. But in his new role, Mr. Goodstein serves as the anti-censor: his job is to put the spiciest stuff front and center. “I’m looking for the most censorable material and saying ‘Bam, there’s a piece of gold,'” he explains, “This is what people have been looking for, to let the noose loose.”[Howard Stern]

Drawing on Mr. Stern’s archived and current fare — from celebrity interviews to more risque, clothing-optional segments — Howard Stern On Demand will feature eight different categories whose themes are self-explanatory. There’s the “Sexy Fun & Games” channel, “Favorite Guests,” “Get Naked,” “Just Outrageous,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Wacky and Weird.”

There will also be a channel devoted to replaying the best of Mr. Stern’s Sirius show, but that won’t premiere until early spring. Mr. Stern’s current radio show, which is carried by Viacom Inc.’s radio unit Infinity Broadcasting ends on December 16 and his show for Sirius is scheduled to debut on January 9.

While the job sounds like every frat boy’s dream, there is a lot of tedium involved. For example, Mr. Goodstein must comb through more than 21,000 miles of videotape shot during Mr. Stern’s morning radio shows of the past 11 years to generate new material for the on-demand channels. There are roughly 50,000 tapes in what’s been dubbed the “Howard Stern Library.” Mr. Goodstein marks each segment so it can later be put on the appropriate channel.

Although some of that footage was used for the “Howard Stern” show that ran on the E! cable channel from 1994 until this past June, much of it — featuring the host and his sidekicks cavorting with zany guests — was so provocative it had to be left on the cutting room floor.

“The whole object here is to start from scratch,” says Mr. Goodstein as he sifts through bookshelves of video cassettes that have post-it notes on them such as “Mary Carey IQ Test” (Ms. Carey is an adult film star who also ran for governor of California.) “Important stuff,” cracks the producer.

Though he’s viewing the material with fresh eyes now, Mr. Goodstein is well familiar with it. He lived through most shows, getting up at 4 a.m. and dragging himself to Mr. Stern’s radio studio as part of the film crew. He declined to reveal his current salary. But an executive producer position in the cable industry similar to that held by Mr. Goodstein typically pays between $150,000 and $180,000 a year.

Mr. Goodstein and the nine people who work for him at In Demand, a pay-per-view and video-on-demand programming service owned jointly by Comcast Corp., Time Warner Inc. and Cox Communications Inc., have so far catalogued their findings. Among them: 1,800 references to women who enjoy the company of other females and 1,000 partially-clad revelers. Says Mr. Goodstein: “We’ll never run out of fresh content.”

Fortunately for Mr. Goodstein, he doesn’t have to go out and get new release forms from all the various women who have bared their souls and other things to Mr. Stern over the years. He has notebooks with 30,000 releases that he says are “beyond ironclad.” Ever aware of how media evolves, Mr. Stern’s releases not only included the radio show and the E! show, but any future medium as well.

That doesn’t mean that Mr. Goodstein doesn’t have to go out and acquire some new material though. For example, adult film star Jenna Jameson is a frequent guest on Mr. Stern’s show and now for the new on-demand show, Mr. Goodstein will have to get new material of her work to use as a lead-in before her segments. He jokes that in the past he was always looking for a “PG piece of porn.” Now, he requires something more daring.

Although Mr. Stern is known as a control freak and often lambastes employees on the air, Mr. Goodstein says, “Howard has given me a lot of discretion” with the channels. “After 11 1/2 years, I think he feels comfortable with what I’m doing.” Still, that doesn’t stop Mr. Goodstein from checking each email to Mr. Stern several times over “just to make sure it’s perfect.”

He does say that despite what people think, “it is a pretty intense professional environment.” Mr. Stern, known for being over-the-top on his show, also has a reputation of being much calmer behind the scenes. “Things are different on and off,” is all Mr. Goodstein will say, before quickly adding, “I don’t want to upset the boss.”
