BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — One local mother is pleading with Birmingham City Council members to shut down a local strip club.
The strip club is a popular spot and council members are trying to figure out whether the club attracts crime or whether the area is to blame.
Cassandra Dunn’s son Allen became Birmingham’s 11th homicide of the year when he was killed on Jan. 23. Dunn was inside Mike’s Crossroads strip club, which is located in the 100 block of Third Avenue North, when he was shot by someone committing a crime outside the club.
“The information given to me by the detective is that a stray bullet came in from the parking lot and went on the inside of the building and my son was hit by the stray bullet,” said Dunn.
The police report states the crime occurred at 101 Third Avenue North and, in parentheses, it says Mike’s Crossroads. The report goes on to say that a preliminary investigation revealed that an apparent robbery of a 29-year-old male victim took place outside and away from the business.
Last week, City Council members voted on a motion to revoke the business license issued to Mike’s Crossroads. The measure failed, but at Tuesday’s meeting, Dunn made her impassioned plea. She said that her son didn’t have to die and that the club breeds crime. This isn’t the first incidence of violence in or around the strip club.
In response, the public safety committee is looking into the matter. Councilmember Valerie Abbott voted against taking away the club’s license last week, but now she wants more information.
“I’m no fan of this type of business. I wish we didn’t have them in Birmingham, but since we do and since they’re legal, we don’t want to take someone’s livelihood away unnecessarily. If it turns out that this business is the problem and the other ones in the surrounding area are not contributing, then maybe it’s his. Maybe he no longer needs to be in that business,” Abbott said.
The public safety committee wants to talk to police officers who have responded to crime reports in the area to see where the crime is coming from. The committee doesn’t meet again for another month.
NBC 13 did make numerous attempts to reach the owner of Mike’s Crossroads for comment, but the building was closed Tuesday and phone calls were not answered.
